I’m not a fan of Proaim (read my other reviews) in any way, shape or form, but if you are a budget filmmaker and need a matte box, this may do the job. It’s simple PVC plastic, no carbon fiber, you are getting what you pay for and nothing more. No one is going to praise you on how sexy it is. Still pretty cheap, but not total garbage. The screws on the side and top wings wear quickly so that keeping them locked in place (the eyebrow specifically) can become an issue.

It may or may not have been broken by them, but none of my Cavision matte boxes have cracked so… This was brought back to me by a client, repaired quite well and is functional again. While they haven’t failed as badly as my Proaim rail systems, I’ve had numerous small issues.įirst, the rail mount base cracked off the bottom of one. I purchased three of these units about a year ago (before knowing they were copied designs). And yes, I’ve handled a very wide range of matte boxes in my career.Īgain, like everything Proaim (sigh), it’s made of crackers and spit. It effectively does the same job as a $2000 matte box with little to no “functional” difference (actual differences later). I’m not going to say that it’s great or sing any kind of praise for it, but it holds 2 4×4 filters, they moves and rotate (together, not individualy), the foam donuts cut light from entering the box, and the hood and wings cut down on stray light entering the lens. You can break 4 of them before you get into the price range of a legit brand name one. At $200, it’s probably the cheapest “real” matte box around. I bought 3 of them for my rental business about a year ago, so I might as well share my opinions on them. Or at least… (as I’ve learned) they’ve copied someone else’s design and made it cheaper.
